How do you build a social networking site?
I have a Mac, and here recently I've been thinking about building my own social networking type site, similar to facebook but on a much smaller scale. More or less, some friends and I would like to make a site incorporating things from myspace and facebook and see how it goes. The problem I am having is that I don't know any software that i can use that are Mac compatible to build a social networking type site. I mean, I know how to build your basic html or javascript website but I've been told that making a social network is a lot different and involves the use of PHP files not even sure what that is to be honest and so i am just at a loss. I've seen some freeware out there for windows based computers and I'd like to find some freeware for mac to test out and see if I can even figure out how to use this stuff before I go out and purchase web servers to host a site that I may not even be able to fully build any help would be much appreciated Thank you Thank you Alex, I will definitely look at these. I know the basics of Html but I know I'm going to need to learn SQL and definitely some more in depth Javascript
How to build a social networking site?
I am planning on building a social networking site in a few months and I am ready to start doing some research on how to go about it. I have built websites in the past using Dreamweaver so I have an understanding of HTML. It sounds like PHP and MySQI is needed to build a social networking site. Can anyone out there point me in the direction of a good reference book note I have used the Visual QuickStart guides in the past for Dreamweaver, Flash and Photoshop and I really liked them. They also publish guides for PHP and MySQI. If anyone knows of these books and can comment specifically on them I would really appreciate it . Also if there are any kinds of useful forums or websites on how to build a social networking site, that would be great as well. Thank you for your help It is much appreciated

How would I go about building a social networking site from scratch? I don't want to do it through any other sites, just me making it. What kind of software would I need?
